Practice Manager, Can You Be Too Friendly at Work?
Friday, May 18th, 2012Let’s face it. You spend the majority of your waking, productive hours at work each day. You and your co-workers are together 8, 10 sometimes 12 hours a day. You handle pressures and stresses that naturally draw you closer together. Those shared experiences deepen your relationship and create strong team bonds that help you to be more effective and efficient. But, can you be too friendly at work? As a Practice Manager, there are a couple of “friendly” dangers to avoid. The first is becoming too friendly with your employees creating roadblocks to effective management. Could EMR Scribes Make Doctors More Effective in the Exam Room?
Thursday, April 19th, 2012There’s a new profession growing out of the transition to electronic medical records (EMR) – the EMR scribe. An EMR scribe is a person who accompanies the doctor on his/her examinations for the sole purpose of handling the electronic medical record documentation. There’s even some talk of virtual scribes who don’t physically accompany the doctor, but can document the EMR through the use of high powered cameras and microphones. It isn’t surprising that doctors are looking for better ways to preserve patient interaction, their own productivity and practice revenue. After all, using an EMR when you’re talking with a patient [...]
HHS Delays ICD-10 Implementation
Thursday, March 8th, 2012Last month, Heath & Human Services (HHS) announced that they were delaying the October 2013 deadline for transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) in an effort to reduce regulatory burden. Together with the transition to form 5010 and the meaningful use deadlines, ICD-10 was just one more challenge for medical practices to understand, adopt and integrate. According to a February 16, 2012 article in FierceHealthIT, the AMA applauded the HHS announcement. “The timing of the ICD-10 transition could not be worse for [...]
Meaningful Use Tip – You Must Update Policies & Procedures Before Attesting to Meaningful Use
Thursday, February 16th, 2012It has been scary here lately to hear Practice Managers answering Yes that they comply with questions for the Security Risk Analysis that is required for Meaningful Use Measure #15 in order to attest. Many of them are stating Yes that they have performed the Security Risk Analysis and know their internal processes for security; however, do not have those processes or policies written. You should know this: Policies and Procedures and Documentation Requirements are part of the Final Rule; and in paraphrasing CFR 164.316(a) you MUST maintain site specific policies and procedures documentation that defines how your organization will [...]
