Stage 2 Deadline Delay Benefits Meaningful Use Early Adopters

Last month the Health & Human Services Department (HHS) announced that they were delaying the deadline for Meaningful Use Stage 2 to 2014 for all providers who attested to Meaningful Use Stage 1 in 2011. The decision was made, in part, to encourage more participation in the meaningful use program. The biggest impact of the delayed deadline is to give early adopters a more reasonable timeline for implementing important Stage 2 functionality in their EHR technology. February 29, 2012 is Last Day to Submit Meaningful Use Data for Stage 1

This year’s Meaningful Use Stage 1 attestation ends on December 31, 2011 for physicians and other medical professionals (September 30, 2011 for hospitals).  However, you have 60 days after this deadline to submit data attesting to CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) that you’ve met the meaningful use criteria for 90 consecutive days in 2011.  This means, you actually have until February 29, 2012 (2012 is a Leap Year) to submit your documentation of attestation for 2011.
